Dear Dr. Jim, How can I build a cohesive team when some employees are back in the office and others are still working from home? - Gwen*
Hi Gwen,
At Vivo Team, we recommend meeting virtually at least three times a week for 10-15 minutes to do a check-in. Do a quick go-around where everyone shares:
What they are working on/their priority for the day
A stuck point (i.e., what’s getting in the way of completing work/tasks)
A recent "win"
I would also encourage those who are used to working more closely with one another in the office to go on Zoom and work side-by-side virtually.
Another thing, at least every quarter, make sure you have a brief meeting with your manager to discuss:
What you have accomplished in the last thee months
What you still need to accomplish
One item you would like to work on (i.e., professional development)
Many companies are also doing Friday afternoon virtual get togethers—to chat casually and talk about what’s going on. Once team members get used to it you’ll feel more connected and subsequently more cohesive. Working virtually doesn’t have to be a barrier if you have discipline. Discipline is the key.
