The Cost of Sidetracks and What to Do About It
Ever try to bring up some constructive feedback, only to have it sidetracked?
This happens to even the most experienced managers. According to Vital Smarts, if you avoid giving feedback for more than a week from an event, it can cost a company about $7500 or 8 work days with mistakes, confusing messages, unresolved conflicts, accidents, and more. Here are some examples of how feedback conversations can get sidetracked and what to do about it.
Dear Dr. Jim, I have an employee who often times when I bring up an issue to provide feedback deflects from the situation. What can I do about it? – Trina*
Hi Trina,
We call this sidetracking, and it's probably more common than you think. In fact, at Vivo Team we teach a whole session on it.
You must always do the following when dealing with sidetracks: Listen carefully to what the sidetracker is saying, but always come back to the goal. Work together to find a solution and follow up by reviewing the progress and providing feedback. Watch this helpful scenario that we use in our training to see these steps in action! Hope this helps.
